Seems like Ukraines biggest push to join NATO was AFTER Russia TOOK Crimea.
  • 2008: Ukraine formally requested the NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP).
  • 2010: The process stalled under President Yanukovich, who did not support a NATO relationship.
  • 2014-present: Following the Revolution of Dignity and the Russian annexation of Crimea, Ukraine has re-emphasized its NATO aspirations.
  • 2017: Ukraine amended its constitution to include NATO membership as a strategic goal.
  • 2022: Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, President Zelenskyy formally requested an accelerated accession to NATO.

Russia's opposition to Ukraine joining NATO is rooted in several factors, primarily its perception that it would bring NATO forces closer to its borders and undermine its security interests. This is a long-standing concern, dating back to the eastward expansion of NATO in the 1990s
